Massage Therapy for Pain Relief and Injury Recovery

Massage therapy is a great addition to the chiropractic and rehabilitative care provided at Mandarino Chiropractic, P.C.. Each massage therapy session is tailored to meet the needs of each patient’s specific injury or condition. While many people receive massage therapy for relaxation purposes, most people do not know that massage therapy has therapeutic benefits as well. Dr. Mandarino’s licensed massage therapists provide care as a natural means to promote healthy body function. It is also a great way to speed up recovery time when injured.

Different Types of Massage Offered at Our Chiropractic and Rehabilitation Center

Acupressure: Acupressure uses pressure and massage techniques to stimulate the body’s muscles and sensory nerves instead of using acupuncture needles. This is usually done through the use of fingers, palms, elbows or special devices in order to apply the necessary pressure to different points on the body.

Cupping Therapy: During cupping therapy, small cups are placed on the body and create a suction. This allows the tissue to release tension, decrease inflammation and increase circulation. Clients could notice a significant change before leaving the massage room!

Lymphatic Drainage: There are different techniques used to perform lymphatic drainage massage but all have the same end goal: to open the lymphatic vessels in order to release excess fluid and allow it to drain back up into the lymph nodes.

Reflexology: Reflexology is a form of massage where pressure is applied to the hands and feet in order to produce changes in pain and other benefits elsewhere in the body. Applying pressure to these reflex areas removed energy blockages from the body and promotes health.

Restorative Hot Stones: Hot stone massage is a unique experience that utilizes smooth stones that are heated in order to provide relaxation as well as restoration. Patients who prefer a lighter massage to deep tissue tend to choose restorative hot stone massage therapy.

Deep Tissue: Deep tissue massage is similar to Swedish massage. However, the pressure is typically deeper and more beneficial to releasing chronic muscle tension. Deep tissue massage focuses on the deepest layers of the muscle tissue, tendons and protective layers surrounding the muscles, bones and joints.

Massage therapy plans tailored to meet the needs of each patient. It can be coordinated with chiropractic care for the best results. Techniques used at our Staten Island facility may include stroking, tapping, kneading, vibration, friction, compression, rocking and different forms of pressure to the muscles and soft tissue depending on the type of massage you receive. During a session, some specific motions and vibrations can be applied with mechanical devices. Oil, lotions and powders are also used to reduce friction.

While many people may see massage as a luxury, it can also assist in your recovery or treatment plan in addition to becoming part of a health regimen.
